What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical

Your New Ulm vet will give your pet a thorough checkup to get a full picture of their overall health. Regular wellness exams at our animal clinic include the elements below:

General Condition

Your animal companion's physical condition and general demeanor can give clues to their overall health. How your pet stands and walks, their level of alertness, and if they are at a healthy weight for their size are key indicators of your pet's overall health.

Coat & Skin

During your dog or cat's checkup, we will look at their coat and skin for signs of any problems, such as excessive dryness or oiliness, dandruff, bumps, lumps, or unusual shedding or hair loss.

Face & Head

Your pet's nose, ears, and eyes will be checked for discharge or abnormalities. We will also examine the mouth for signs of oral health problems like periodontal disease or plaque buildup. 

Internal Health

Heart rate, rhythm, pulse, and blood pressure are extremely important to the health of your pet and their internal organs. We will test these to make sure they are normal.  We'll also check the lungs for evidence of abnormal breathing. 

Lymph nodes will be examined for pain and swelling, we will also check the abdomen to make sure the kidneys, stomach, intestines, spleen, liver, and bladder all feel normal, and that your companion is not showing signs of discomfort. 

Review of Findings

When your cat or dog's checkup and routine wellness exam is over, your vet will take the time that is necessary to discuss concerns they might have in regards to your pet's overall health and talk to you about your animal friend's nutritional requirements. 

Checkups for Puppies & Kittens

Kittens and puppies require proper medical attention in the first few weeks of their lives to get a healthy start to life. 

We will provide your new furry friend with the appropriate immunizations, deworming medications and a complete physical examination. We'll also perform a test for intestinal parasites. You will be given a puppy or kitten 'kit' that includes samples and educational materials to help you take care of your new family member. 

Never hesitate when you feel the need to contact us with any questions or concerns you have when it comes to caring for your new pet, either at your appointments or in between your visits.

As soon as your kitten or puppy's checkup is finished, return periodically for their mandatory booster shots. 

Checkups for Senior Pets

With the new advancements in veterinary medical care and knowledge, as well as newer therapies and better nutrition options, senior pets are now living longer than ever before.

This is great news for all pets and their owners, although it also means that your senior pet's healthcare routine requires special attention. As your pet passes its middle-age years, routine pet checkups and exams become increasingly more important to help maintain their good health as they continue to age. 

On top of the routine wellness procedures, we provide to all adult pets, we will give special attention to your senior cat or dog's potential geriatric conditions, including arthritis or decreased vision.

Further laboratory tests might be suggested for senior pets to get more in-depth information about your aging animal friend's overall physical health and wellbeing.
